Blue Sky Theatre returns this winter with a striking new production of Andrew Bovell’s internationally acclaimed drama When the Rain Stops Falling.
Known for our elegant storytelling, we’re bringing this romantic, funny and deeply moving play to the Domain Theatre, Marion Cultural Centre, for a limited season from Friday 24 July to Sunday 2 August.
Set against the backdrop of a world shaped by climate change and personal regret, When the Rain Stops Falling follows Gabriel Law as he travels from London to the Coorong in South Australia to trace the mystery of his father’s disappearance.
At a lonely roadhouse, he meets Gabrielle, and their immediate connection changes everything.
History echoes through four generations. Years later, their son, Gabriel York, waits for his own estranged son to arrive for lunch. He is looking for answers, too.
Director Dave Simms describes the story as both a mystery and an emotional journey, spanning from 1959 London to a potential future in Australia. It highlights how the decisions of one generation influence the destinies of those who follow.
“If you watch Who Do You Think You Are on TV, you’ll know how fascinating it can be to see people trace their family tree and discover things they never knew about their ancestors. Especially those secrets that families never speak of,” said Dave.
“In this play, we actually meet Gabriel’s ancestors while he tries to solve the puzzle of his past. I hope audiences will enjoy working out who is who, what happened and when.”
With its carefully woven story and powerful themes, Andrew Bovell’s extraordinary theatrical masterpiece is one of the most celebrated Australian plays of modern times.
Andrew Bovell is renowned for his work in theatre, film, and television. His hits include Things I Know to Be True, The Secret River in the Adelaide Festival, the screenplay for the movie Strictly Ballroom, and Lantana, based on his award-winning stage play Speaking in Tongues.
This South Australian production of When The Rain Stops Falling stars Laura Antoniazzi, Bart Csorba, Imogen Deller-Evans, Fahad Farooque, Nicole Rutty, Leighton Vogt and Tracey Walker. It promises to be both engaging and touching, offering a theatre experience that lingers long after the final moment.
